Email blocklists are DNS-based databases of IPs and domains that mailbox providers have classified as spam sources. If your sending IP or domain shows up on a major blocklist, your delivery rate collapses overnight. The bad news: getting on one takes a single mistake. The good news: most of them have clear, fair delisting processes.

The blocklists that actually matter

There are dozens of blocklists. Mailbox providers consult only a handful. These are the ones to watch:

  • Spamhaus SBL, XBL, PBL. The most influential. If you are on Spamhaus, you are blocked by half the inbox providers in the world.
  • Spamhaus DBL (Domain Blocklist). Lists domains, not IPs. Critical for senders.
  • Barracuda Reputation Block List. Used heavily in enterprise filtering.
  • SpamCop. Aggregates user complaints. Most major providers consult it.
  • UCEPROTECT. Aggressive listing, controversial reputation. Some providers consult it, many ignore it.
  • SORBS, Invaluement, Cloudmark. Smaller but still consulted by enterprise filters.

How to check if you are listed

The easiest tool: MXToolbox Blacklist Check. Enter your sending IP or domain, get a report across 100+ blocklists in seconds. Free.

For ongoing monitoring, set up a daily cron that hits MXToolbox's API (or Google Postmaster Tools) and pages you if you suddenly appear on Spamhaus.

What gets you listed

  1. Hitting a spam trap. One spam-trap address on your list, one campaign, and Spamhaus has you. Buying or scraping lists is the #1 way this happens.
  2. High complaint rate. Above 0.3% spam complaints triggers listing on several aggregators.
  3. Sudden volume spike. Going from 1k/day to 100k/day in a week looks like a botnet to filters.
  4. Compromised email account. Someone steals your SendGrid credentials and blasts spam. You wake up blocked.
  5. Shared IP problems. If you use a shared sending IP on Mailchimp or SendGrid, another customer's behavior can list the IP.

The delisting playbook

For each blocklist you appear on:

  1. Find the root cause first. Do not request delisting until you know what you did wrong. Most blocklists permanent-list repeat offenders.
  2. Stop the source. If a spam trap got hit, remove the trap. If a compromised account is sending, rotate credentials and audit logs.
  3. Fix your authentication. Confirm SPF, DKIM, DMARC all pass.
  4. Verify your list. Strip every invalid and disposable address from your active mailing.
  5. File the delisting request. Each blocklist has a removal page. Be honest about what happened and what you fixed. Spamhaus removal typically processes in 24 to 48 hours; Barracuda within a week.
  6. Wait, do not retry. Submitting multiple delisting requests for the same listing slows the process.

How to stay off blocklists

  • Never buy or scrape lists. The #1 rule.
  • Verify every list before sending. Bounce rate and spam-trap exposure both drop.
  • Use double opt-in for newsletter signups.
  • Honour unsubscribes within an hour.
  • Warm up new IPs and domains slowly.
  • Monitor Postmaster Tools and MXToolbox weekly.

FAQ

How long does delisting take?

Spamhaus: 24 to 48 hours after request approval. Barracuda: 3 to 7 days. Others vary.

Will being delisted restore my deliverability immediately?

The blocklist is one signal. Mailbox providers also have their own reputations. You may still be in spam folder for weeks after delisting while your engagement signals recover.

Can I avoid blocklists by using a different ESP?

The IP changes, your domain reputation does not. If you are listed because of bad behavior, switching ESPs just buys you a new IP with no history. The bad behavior follows.

Prevention is cheaper than removal

Verify your list before every campaign. Spam traps are the fastest path to a blocklist; removing them removes the risk.
